So I fell in love with the "Ballerina" Dalek from the Asylum of the Daleks episode of season 7... I'd still like to build a proper Dalek based on it someday but with FanExpo just around the corner a Dalek Dress will have to do!

My first step after deciding that I wanted to make a dress based on my beloved "ballerina Dalek" was to look for pictures online as inspiration: **edit** the original image is a .GIF (the Dalek twirls) but only .JPEG is supported** While I like this one, the picture I chose for my avatar proved more usefull... My next step was to go shopping for a suitable dress to modify and the assorted pieces I would need to make it a "Dalek".

This is the dress I bought, I loved the cream colour and thought the pearly beads looked a bit like hemis.

After I found the perfect dress I went to Dollarama to buy as many cheap supplies as I could... I found a headlamp that I'm trying to turn into an eyestalk, some gold fabric paint, a whisk, a headband and some plastic shot glasses for the headlights. Next on my list is a plunger which I haven't got yet.

Because they're strangely difficult to find (of course, I haven't looked that hard...)

So thanks to christinab I was able to find the perfect tiny plunger at Canadian Tire. Since I could only find unpainted wood with orange rubber I had to break out my paints to make it black and gold to match the rest of my costume. I need to do at least one more coat of gold on the handle but I'm quite happy with the way the plunger head turned out!

My next move is to acquire the rest of the accessories I'll need before I have to leave town again for work... I've bought a paint of metallic gold leggings off eBay and I'm seeing a friend tomorrow about borrowing her old ballet shoes! (Since I am making my beloved ballerina!dalek after all...)

My next few steps were to test different circle sizes for the hemispheres... I decided on 2&1/2 inches in diametre. Followed quickly by testing whether my silver coloured metal whisk can be painted. First stage in the painting colour is a base coat of yellow so the gold doesn't brown out too much...

Update: the first coat went on well enough but the acrylic doesn't adhere well enough to do a second coat without removing parts of the first coat in the process

So I've finished painting about million coats on my hemis which I made with 2.5in diameter circles cut out tshirt material (so as to not wreck my dress with a bad paint job). Each of the 40 hemis has a minimum of 4 coats of paint I've started attaching the hemis to my dress, I'm using "Ultra Bond" superglue... So far things are going well (except that I've glued the work gloves I was wearing for safety's sake to the bottle of glue...) I'm still debating whether or not the pleats are sufficient pannel markers or if I should try to add some piping.

Okay, silly question...How did you decide where you were going to place the hemis? Did you open up the skirt and measure the width, then divide that by ten for the panels? Did you just eyeball it?
I'm trying to figure out the best way to do mine!

I just fanned out the skirt like in the picture and eyeballed five rows of four (20) which I'll just repeat on the back

I made the mistake of telling my dad I wanted my headlights to light up when I talk... Now, My dad is a computer programmer/ amateur handyman; there is nothing he enjoys more than a good DIY project! So now he's been googling how-to videos and looking at video clips of Dreadnaught and Auric talking... I finally introduced him to ProjectDalek... and he's having a blast looking at DIY ring mods... So if everything works out I will have a working voice-mod that connects to my headlights and blinks when I talk!!!
...or I'll have two plastic shot glasses glued to a headband.
