So as I mentioned in a previous thread, I don't sew. Luckily, I found the perfect dress at Value Village! A gorgeous navy strapless number! Oooh... Next, I needed supplies. I found Styrofoam balls, eight to a package at Dollarama and cut those in half. I bought enough to make 40 hemis, as the guidelines say. Now, these were MESSY to cut. After trying a few different knives, I found that one of these worked best-- Next, to WalMart! I found a mini glue gun, glue sticks and the perfect spray paint there! ...and that's where I am now! As soon as I get the chance, I'll post pics of the painted hemis, the whisk, plunger and everything else!

Well, I have a major setback. The spray paint melts my styrofoam hemis.
Back to the drawing board. I need to figure out what I'm going to do now.

Crisis averted! After two failed attempts with spray paint, I finally bought acrylic paint and a foam brush and hand painted 40 hemispheres! They'll all get a second coat tonight, and they're not as nice looking as they would be if spray painted (brush marks ), but they'll do! Pics soon!

You're so smart with the styrofoam balls, definitely a much less expensive option that I didnt realize. That dress is gorgeous, I can't wait to see how it turns out!

I'd imagine that the spray paint adheres to acrylic worry free if you want to use it as a final coat... My fabric patches have at least 4 coats of acrylic and my plunger took several coats as well

40 hemis, hand painted with two coats! Up next, the hard part! Applying the hemis to the dress evenly! Ugh...

Doing the lines or panel separations first might help with that, its what I did and seemed like a good idea

I found with mine it helped to lay the dress flat and lay out the hemis in rows of 4X5 that way I could shift them around until I was happy with the spacing

I think I'm going to try to lay it flat, yeah. I'm worried that if I do the lines first, they won't be even either, lol.

Finally placing the hemis! Don't laugh. The only place I have room to spread the dress out is on my kitchen floor!

Ladies and gentlemen, my completed Dalek dress. It's far from perfect, and it'll never win any awards, but it *should* work for the WW attempt and con cosplay! I haven't yet started my eyestalk or ears, but as soon as I get those done and attached to a headband, I'll post that also.

...is anything ever *completely* done, really? I just tried it on--I look like the Dalek Prom Queen, by the way -- and I'm not comfortable with how low the Dalek design starts. I placed the hemis low so that I could sit comfortably, but that leaves nothing on my upper thigh area. I'm going to make a grill of some sort with more duct tape!

Looks great! And that is a really good idea! There's a lot of trial and error that goes in to the big guys so no worries!
